Russia, Iran in talks on construction of small nuclear plants: What to know
The comments by the head of Rosatom follow increasing cooperation between Iran and Russia on gas.
Russia is in talks with Tehran on the construction of nuclear power plants in Iran, a Russian official said on Friday, as the two countries move closer on energy issues in the face of increasing US sanctions.
Alexey Likhachev, CEO of the state-owned Russian nuclear power company Rosatom, told the Russian television station Rossiya-1 that negotiations are underway on the construction of small nuclear power plants in Iran.
“At the beginning of this year, Iranian partners came up with a proposal to expand the agenda from large units to small ones, including small modular reactors,” Likhachev told the broadcaster, without specifying how many structures would be built.
The remarks were picked up by Iran's semi-official news outlets Tasnim and Mehr.
