The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) said in a press release on Friday that it compiled information indicating that at least 841 people have been executed in Iran from the beginning of the year to Aug. 28. Of them, 110 executions have been documented in July alone, more than double the people put to death during the same month last year.
Speaking to reporters in Geneva on Friday, UN Rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani warned that the actual number may be even higher. “The real situation might be different. It might be worse, given the lack of transparency.”
According to a tally by the Norway-based Iran Human Rights group (IHRNGO), 848 people have been executed in Iran so far this year, including 22 women.
