Japan has lifted sanctions on and unfrozen the assets of at least four Syrian banks as Tokyo follows the West in easing sanctions on the war-torn nation.

The East Asian country’s cabinet approved the move in a Friday meeting.

Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, Hayashi Yoshimasa, told reporters in Tokyo that his country will “support positive efforts in Syria and help improve the lives of its people, who have been worn down by years of crisis, while remaining in step with the international community.”

The Syrian banks were not named.
