Egypt and China launched their first-ever joint air exercise, Eagles of Civilization 2025, in April 2025, marking a new milestone in Cairo-Beijing military ties. Though officially framed as technical cooperation, the exercise carries far deeper strategic and symbolic implications — both for Egypt’s balancing strategy and for China’s growing defense outreach into the Middle East. 

Running from mid-April through early May, the exercise has brought together the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) for a series of tactical drills, including joint aerial sorties, simulated air combat management operations and lectures on modern air warfare.

China's deployment of advanced systems, such as the J-10C fighter jets, KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft and Y-20 transport tankers, highlights its ability to project power beyond Asia. Egypt, for its part, contributed its MiG-29M/M2 multirole fighters and other platforms from its diverse fleet of American-, French- and Russian-made aircraft.

According to Egypt’s military spokesman, the drills aim to unify combat concepts between the two sides and falls within the broader framework of strengthening military cooperation. But as analysts point out to Al-Monitor, the political undercurrents are even more telling.
