WASHINGTON — In the spring of 2003, US Air Force National Guard pilot Daniel Caine was flying his F-16 in formation over the Haditha Dam in Iraq’s western Al-Anbar province, far to the northwest of the main US invasion force.
His fighter squadron was part of Task Force Dagger, a multinational joint special operations cell tasked with tracking down Saddam Hussein’s remaining Scud missiles before the Iraqi army could launch them.
For months, Caine and his team rehearsed the operation under cover of night at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, developing new data-link-enabled air-to-ground targeting tactics to help special operators on the ground eliminate Saddam’s SCUDs through close air support.
