Palestinian poll finds majority of Gazans say Hamas' Oct. 7 attack was wrong
A September public opinion poll from the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research shows that Palestinian support for Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack has dropped and a majority of Palestinians in Gaza say the attack was not the right move.
Support for Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel has dropped significantly among Gazans and, for the first time, a majority of Gazans have judged the attack as wrong, according to a poll published Tuesday.
The Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR) conducted a poll in early September, asking 410 people in Gaza and 790 people in the West Bank whether they thought the Oct. 7 attack, which killed nearly 1,200 Israelis, was a positive move. With a 3.5% margin of error, 57% of Gazans surveyed said the attack was wrong and 39% said it was the right thing to do.
In the West Bank, though 64% of respondents said that attack was the right move, that number dropped from 73% in June.
The PCPSR noted, “It is important to note that support for this attack does not necessarily mean support for Hamas and does not mean support for any killings or atrocities committed against civilians. Indeed, almost 90% of the public believes Hamas men did not commit the atrocities depicted in videos taken on that day."
