Hamas said on Monday that Israel killed one of its senior officials in Gaza while later in the day a US official confirmed the death of the deputy head of the group’s military wing, Marwan Issa.

Hamas said that Faiq al-Mabhouh, the director of central operations for police in Gaza, was killed by Israeli forces at the Al-Shifa hospital. He was working to secure the arrival of aid to Gaza at the time of his death, according to a Hamas statement published by the affiliated Palestinian Information Center.

The Hamas-affiliated Shehab News Agency reported that Mabhouh refused to surrender and clashed with Israeli forces before he was killed.
