Democratic Senator Chris Coons is traveling to Lebanon on Tuesday as the country grapples with continued economic and political paralysis as well as the effects of the Gaza war.

A spokesperson for the Delaware senator confirmed the trip to Al-Monitor but was unable to immediately provide further details.

Coons is an influential senator and chairs the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He is also a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is seen as a close confidant of US President Joe Biden who also hails from the state of Delaware.

The US Embassy in Beirut did not immediately respond to Al-Monitor’s request for comment
