Saudi inks $3.2B missile defense deal with South Korea as Iran attends expo

The World Defense Show has yielded deals between Saudi Arabia and South Korea and may lead to the strengthening of the kingdom’s ties with Iran, the United States and others.

South Korea unveiled a major weapons deal with Saudi Arabia on Tuesday as the kingdom seeks to boost its defense ties with the Asian country, Iran and others via the Riyadh defense expo.

The South Korean defense firm LIG Nex1 signed a $3.2 billion deal with the Saudi Defense Ministry to export its Cheongung M-SAM II missile defense system to the kingdom. The deal was signed after the Saudi and South Korean defense ministers met at the World Defense Show in Riyadh on Sunday, the South Korean Defense Ministry said.

The World Defense Show began on Sunday and will conclude on Thursday. Hundreds of defense manufacturers are listed as exhibitors on the show’s website. The list of participating firms includes the China state-owned defense giant Norinco, the Russian state space company Roscosmos, the Indian drone manufacturer Karman and Boeing.
