Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh arrived in Egypt Wednesday for talks on the ongoing Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip and other issues, the movement said in a statement.

Agence France Presse had reported earlier that Haniyeh is expected to meet with Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel and other officials during his visit to Cairo to discuss a cease-fire in Gaza and a prisoner exchange deal with Israel.

AFP cited a source close to Hamas as saying the discussions will focus “on stopping the aggression and the war to prepare an agreement for the release of prisoners [and] the end of the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip," as well as “the delivery of humanitarian aid, the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the Gaza Strip and the return of displaced persons to their towns and villages in the north.”

Haniyeh’s visit to Cairo is his second since the war erupted Oct. 7. He had traveled to the Egyptian capital Nov. 9.
