Israel continued to expand its operations in the Gaza Strip on Monday as a United Nations official warned that order is “starting to break down” in the enclave due to the dire humanitarian situation.

Reuters reported on Monday that Israeli troops and tanks attacked Gaza City from the north and the east. Islamic Jihad, which fights alongside Hamas, said it had engaged Israeli forces. The Israel Defense Forces repeated its calls for civilians to move south within the Strip, according to the outlet.

Earlier, the Palestinian Authority’s WAFA news agency reported that Israeli airstrikes killed dozens throughout the enclave on Monday, including in the Jabalia refugee camp in the north, Zawayda in central Gaza and near Al-Quds hospital in the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood southwest of Gaza City. The outlet also reported artillery shelling north of Gaza City.

The death toll in Gaza from the Israeli strikes continued to rise on Monday. The Hamas-run Health Ministry reported the number of dead at 8,260, with more than 21,000 wounded. The ministry said 73% of those killed were women, children and the elderly.
