ANKARA — Turkey is fighting multiple wildfires as the majority of the country bakes in extreme heat and high humidity, in a wave that has forced travel disruptions.

Turkey’s Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Mehmet Ozhaseki said the temperatures across the country reached a new record this week, with the central Anatolian province of Eskisehir hitting 49.5 Celsius (121 Fahrenheit). “Temperatures surged to a record level in Turkey today because of the heat wave gripping the country,” Ozhaseki wrote on Twitter late Tuesday.

Fueled by the extreme heat, at least 10 wild fires have been reported this week in various regions including the southeast and the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts.
