Shooting attack in Jerusalem as Israel conducts raid in West Bank

April has been a particularly deadly month in Israel and the Palestinian territories as tensions soar.

Violence between Israelis and Palestinians continued with two separate incidents on Tuesday.

A shooting targeting a vehicle occurred near the Shim'on HaTsadik light rail station in Jerusalem, leaving two people injured. Police began a search for the suspect, the Israel Police said in a series of tweets.

Israeli forces conducted a raid in East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood following the shooting, the Palestinian Authority’s official WAFA news agency reported.

Also on Tuesday, eight Palestinians were injured in an Israeli raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. Some of the victims sustained gunshot wounds, according to WAFA.

The Israel Defense Forces tweeted that they were operating in the area but did not provide further details.

Why it matters: Violent incidents between Israelis and Palestinians in both Israel and the West Bank and Gaza have been regular occurrences throughout the year. Tensions are particularly high at present. The following is a list of notable escalations in Israel and the Palestinian territories this month.

April 1 - Israeli forces shot and killed an alleged car-ramming attacker in Beit Ummar in the West Bank.

April 3 - Two Palestinian members of the Lion’s Den armed group were killed in an Israeli military raid in Nablus in the West Bank.

April 5 - Worshippers barricaded themselves inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem. Israeli police used stun grenades in response, leading to regional condemnation.

April 6 - Rockets were fired from both Lebanon and Gaza into Israel, prompting retaliatory Israeli airstrikes.

April 7 - Two Israeli sisters were killed in a shooting attack near the West Bank settlement of Hamra.

April 11 - The Israeli military shot and killed two members of the armed wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement who they said fired at them in Nablus.

Know more: The Lion’s Den executed a Palestinian in Nablus earlier this month for allegedly collaborating with Israel. The incident was reminiscent of extrajudicial killings that took place during the second intifada, Ahmad Melhem reported for Al-Monitor from Ramallah.
