A 6-year-old child and a man in his 20s were killed Friday afternoon in a vehicular attack outside an Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem. At least five other people were injured.

The assailant was identified as Hossein Karaka, resident of the east Jerusalem Issawiya neighborhood. According to preliminary reports, Karaka drove his vehicle into a bus stop on the outskirts of the Ramot settlement where several people were waiting, including children on their way home from school. An off-duty police officer on the scene and another officer who quickly arrived shot and killed the assailant.

Shortly after the attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed security agencies to investigate and make arrests, as well as to seal off and demolish Karaka's home. "Our answer to terrorism is to strike it with all our might and deepen our grip on our country even more," said Netanyahu.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir arrived to the scene shortly after the attack, hailing Netanyahu’s decision to seal off the home of the assailant. "I instructed the police to block all the roads to Issawiya and stop each person [at the barriers] for questioning. I wanted to close the whole neighborhood, but it’s complicated legally."
