ALEXANDRIA, Egypt — While drama films have long portrayed fictional heroes of legendary love stories, sometimes real-life love goes beyond all imagination.

One such story began in Homs, Syria, when Mufid’s mother visited the house of Ghouroud’s parents to ask for her hand in marriage. Mufid was working abroad and his parents wanted him to marry a Syrian woman. Ghouroud, who is the neighbor's daughter, had only seen Mufid in photos.

Mufid and Ghouroud got married in 1999. Mufid, 57, owns a shop that provides sewing, ironing and tailoring services. Ghouroud, 50, helps him from home with some of the work such as sewing and ironing.

Four years into their marriage, Ghouroud was diagnosed with Harada syndrome that impaired her eyesight and hearing.
