The US-Iran war is once again at an impasse. With neither a clean military victory nor an open diplomatic path to peace, the conflict is spreading to the periphery.

This week, Egypt and Jordan were hit by new projectile attacks, Saudi Arabia joined the US in bombing Iranian personnel in Iraq and Riyadh rallied a maritime coalition to head off any attempt by the Houthis to close the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

As both sides use the pause to jockey for the upper hand on adjacent fronts, the Pentagon is buckling down on its core objectives.
