Israel abruptly resumed an expanded military offensive in Lebanon this week despite a US-brokered ceasefire, leading to sharp objections from the Lebanese government.

Despite the tensions, Pentagon officials convened with both Israeli and Lebanese generals as planned ahead of diplomatic talks between the two sides set for next week in Washington.

Even though the Israeli assault hasn’t yet scuttled the dialogue, it is threatening to complicate an even higher priority for the Trump administration: reaching a peace agreement with Iran.
