This week, Saudi Arabia’s decision to strike the port of Mukalla and issue an ultimatum to the United Arab Emirates to withdraw from Yemen marked the sharpest escalation yet between the two Gulf partners, bringing long-simmering tensions in southern Yemen into the open and raising new questions about the future of Gulf coordination along the Red Sea-Gulf of Aden corridor.
