Why Morocco matters to Beijing

Later this week, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita will head to Beijing, as China-Morocco relations grow. But any deep engagement with Morocco inevitably intersects with one of North Africa's most entrenched political disputes: Western Sahara. Beijing officially supports a “mutually acceptable” solution under the auspices of the UN, but its growing economic ties with Rabat risk unsettling Algeria, a long-time friend of China.
