Russia’s Rosatom says staff to return to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant: What to know
Russia evacuated hundreds of personnel from Bushehr after the start of the US-Israel-Iran war, but it has pledged to continue helping Iran develop its nuclear capabilities.
Russia’s top nuclear official said on Monday that Russian specialists are set to return to Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant this month, underscoring the Kremlin’s continued commitment to the Iranian program following wartime evacuations from the facility.
Alexei Likhachev, who heads the state-owned nuclear power firm Rosatom, said the situation is currently “calm” at Bushehr, enabling staff to return.
“The situation is calm at Bushehr. If the situation does not get worse than today, we plan to start restoring the number [of personnel] from mid-July,” he told reporters, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.
The Bushehr nuclear power plant is located in the eponymous southern Iranian city and currently has one active reactor, which was built in part by the Rosatom subsidiary Atomstroyexport.
