Macron's Syria visit eyes to boost France's economic role: What to know
The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and various regional developments during the first visit by a Western head of state to Syria since the civil war ended.
French President Emmanuel Macron made a historic two-day visit to Syria, where he strongly backed the country’s sovereignty and fight against terrorism while pledging to deepen economic ties.
What happened: Macron arrived in Damascus on Monday night and met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Tuesday.

They participated in a round table with business leaders and investors and entities from both countries signed a number of cooperation deals covering health, energy, logistics and other sectors, Syria’s official SANA news outlet reported.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Macron expressed interest in “the rehabilitation of infrastructure in the energy and trade sectors” in Syria.
