On eighth visit, Israel’s Netanyahu seeks to repair ties with Trump
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to focus on Iran in his Tuesday meeting with President Donald Trump, while the US leader is more likely to want to discuss Lebanon and Syria.
WASHINGTON — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House Tuesday amid a fragile pause in hostilities between the United States and Iran.
Netanyahu and Trump will discuss the war and ways to “expand the circle of peace” in the region, according to a statement issued Monday by the prime minister’s office. The statement noted that the meeting — their eighth since the start of Trump’s second term — is scheduled for 11 a.m. local time.
It comes as the US president weighs a major military escalation in Iran after nearly five months of war and the collapse of the mid-June ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
Speaking with reporters on Air Force One on Monday, Trump said there’s “a little difference” between him and Netanyahu on Iran but their positions are “pretty close.”
