A bridge linking Saudi Arabia to Bahrain was briefly closed as Iran escalates its attacks in the Gulf ahead of a looming US deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Flights were gradually resuming at Dubai airport on March 16, previously the world's busiest for international flights, the airport operator said, after a "drone-related incident" sparked a fuel tank fire nearby, as Iran kept up its Gulf attacks. Gulf nations braced for further military escalation as Iran continued attacking Gulf energy infrastructure on Tuesday, while US President Donald Trump’s deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face the destruction of key infrastructure and power plants approached.

Trump ramped up his threats on Monday after Iran rejected a US proposal for a 45-day ceasefire.

“The entire country can be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow night,” Trump said at a White House news conference. “We're giving them till tomorrow, eight o'clock Eastern time, and after that, they're going to have no bridges, they're going to have no power plants.”

Despite the ultimatum, Iran has refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while escalating its attacks against oil and gas facilities across the Gulf.
