Can Bennett, Lapid unite Israel’s opposition to unseat Netanyahu?
Six months before Israel's next elections, opposition leaders Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid have decided to run on one anti-Netanyahu ticket.
Israel's opposition is making a coordinated push to unseat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the upcoming October elections. While the move could strengthen the opposition's electoral position, there are big questions about how such an alliance would govern.
Former prime ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid announced last Sunday that they would run on a joint ticket in the next elections, scheduled for the end of October. The two opposition leaders' unified opposition party, “Together,” will bank on voter optimism and enthusiasm to bring down the Netanyahu government.
Bennett and Lapid are currently working to bring on board former Israeli military chief Gadi Eisenkot, who formed his own party, “Yashar!”, seven months ago. Eisenkot served as a minister without portfolio and a member of the security cabinet from October 2023 until July 2025 and many Israelis consider him one of the country’s most honest and respected politicians. Lapid informed Bennett earlier this week that he would give up his No. 2 position on their joint list in favor of Eisenkot if he agrees to join them.
