Bahrain has stripped citizenship from dozens of people as it intensifies a sweeping crackdown on alleged sympathy for Iran.

What happened: A statement by Bahrain’s Interior Ministry on Monday said it had revoked citizenship from 69 individuals — a figure that includes the accused as well as their family members and dependents — for “expressing sympathy for and glorifying Iran’s sinful hostile acts.”

According to Bahrain’s official news agency, none of the individuals are of Bahraini origin.

The revocations were carried out under legal provisions allowing the state to strip nationality from individuals whose actions are deemed to threaten national security. The law states that citizenship may be revoked if a person “causes harm to the security of the State.”
