Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, arrived in Qatar on Wednesday following a similar trip to Oman the day before, meeting both senior Qatari officials and Hamas leadership. The trips come amid preparations to hold another round of US-Iran negotiations on the nuclear issue.

Regional diplomacy

In Doha, Larijani — secretary of the National Security Council, Iran’s top decision-making body on defense and foreign policy — was received by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and the latest regional developments, as well as efforts to de-escalate security tensions, the official Qatari news agency (QNA) said.

Qatar, home to Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military base in the Middle East, has played a key mediating role between Iran and the United States in the past, given its balanced relations with the two sides.
