China on Friday urged its nationals in Iran to take strong security precautions and evacuate the country as soon as possible, becoming the latest nation to do so amid mounting tensions over a potential US attack on Iran that could trigger a wider regional war.

What happened: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chinese Embassy in Iran said in a statement that Chinese embassies and consulates in neighboring countries are assisting Chinese citizens with commercial flights or land transportation.

On Friday, the Chinese Embassy in Israel advised its nationals living in the country to take extra safety precautions due to growing instability in the Middle East, asking them to closely follow developments and be prepared for escalation.

Earlier that day, Canada issued a similar warning, calling on its nationals in Iran to immediately leave the country.
