US envoy pushes for Sudan truce in meeting with UAE’s MBZ after talks in Saudi Arabia
Boulos’ meeting in Abu Dhabi follows discussions earlier this week in Riyadh, as the two Gulf countries navigate both Sudan diplomacy and a dispute over Yemen.
A senior US envoy met with United Arab Emirates officials, including the country's president, in Abu Dhabi on Thursday as Washington intensifies efforts to broker a humanitarian truce in Sudan, days after also holding talks with Saudi leaders in Riyadh.
What happened: US Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos met in Abu Dhabi with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, national security adviser Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Minister of State Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan.
According to a statement from Boulos after the meeting, the men discussed “the urgent need to reach — and swiftly implement — a humanitarian truce in Sudan to end the suffering, along with other critical regional issues.”
Boulos has emerged as the US President Donald Trump's point person on Sudan, leading renewed diplomatic outreach aimed at halting a conflict that has displaced more than 12 million people and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
