Turkey hits renewable milestone as solar surpasses gas in power capacity
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said in a statement that wind and solar capacity combined had risen to 39,215 megawatts by the end of November.
Solar power has surpassed natural gas in Turkey’s electricity capacity mix, marking a milestone in the country’s push toward its net-zero targets, according to official data released Monday.
What happened: Turkey’s combined wind and solar capacity reached 39,215 megawatts at the end of November, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said in a statement. Solar alone now accounts for 20.3%, or 24,669 MW, of total installed power capacity, making it the second-largest source in the mix. Wind accounted for 11.9%, or 14,546 MW, making it the fourth largest.
"As a result, one-third of our installed capacity now comes solely from wind and solar," Bayraktar said.
Natural gas is now the third-largest energy source in the power mix at 20%, equivalent to 24,236 MW.
