Sweden has summoned Iran’s ambassador over reports that a dual Iranian-Swedish citizen has been sentenced to death for espionage, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

What happened: Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said on Friday that Stockholm summoned Iran’s ambassador, Hojatollah Faghani, earlier this week after receiving unconfirmed information that the man, whose identity has not been publicly confirmed, had been condemned to death by an Iranian court.

“We have received reports that he has been sentenced to death ... but we have not been able to confirm those reports. We are naturally trying to do so,” Stenergard told reporters.

“We have summoned Iran’s ambassador on Wednesday to clearly condemn the death sentence,” she said.
