Russia to launch 3 Iranian satellites into orbit this month: What to know

The upcoming launch will be the second time Russia’s Soyuz rockets have carried Iranian-made satellites into space.

The Soyuz MS-15 rocket carrying three crew members of the International Space Station (ISS) blasts off to the ISS from the launch pad of the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Sept. 25, 2019.

Three Iranian satellites will be placed into orbit using Russia’s Soyuz launch vehicles later this month, Iranian media announced on Thursday. The move will mark another milestone for Iran’s growing space program, which significantly relies on Russian expertise.

The Nour news agency, which is linked to Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said the launch date has been set for Dec. 28.

The three Earth observation satellites — Zafar-2, Paya and a second version of the Kowsar satellite — will be launched into space from the Vostochny Cosmodrome spaceport in eastern Russia.

The satellites are designed for imaging and data transmission to be used in the fields of agriculture, natural resources management and environmental monitoring, according to Nour news agency.
