Sudan army steps up airstrikes as Darfur siege tightens: What to know

In September, a top Sudanese general announced an offensive to take back the Darfur region from the RSF, and the army is following through.

The Sudanese Armed Forces have escalated their campaign against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, launching airstrikes in South and North Darfur on Thursday.

What happened: On Thursday, the SAF reportedly struck RSF positions in Nyala, South Darfur, and near El Fasher, North Darfur.

Late on Thursday, reports circulated on social media of sounds of explosions in Nyala, where the RSF controls a key airport it reportedly uses as a logistics hub.

On Wednesday, a drone attack targeted an RSF training camp near Nyala.
