US working to broker talks between Sudan factions, Trump envoy says
Massad Boulos also said an agreement was nearly finalized with the Rapid Support Forces to bring humanitarian aid to El Fasher.
NEW YORK CITY — The Trump administration is working to facilitate the first direct talks in two years between Sudan’s warring Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a senior US official said Wednesday.
Massad Boulos, the US senior adviser on Arab and African affairs, told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that the United States and its partners are “working on that [direct talks] right now.”
“Obviously, the devil lies in the details, as we all know, but there are some general principles that everybody agrees with,” Boulos said.
The United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt — the so-called Quad — proposed a joint road map for peace in Sudan on Sept. 12, which calls for a three-month truce between the SAF and RAF, to be followed by a permanent ceasefire and the eventual selection of a transitional civilian-led government.
