Israeli forces conducted a series of raids across the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, arresting several Palestinians — including the mayor of Hebron — as Israel weighs the annexation of parts of the territory.

Hebron Mayor Tayseer Abu Sneineh was detained at dawn on Tuesday after several Israeli forces stormed his home in the southern West Bank city of Hebron. They searched the house and destroyed some of its contents, causing extensive material losses, according to a statement from the Hebron municipality.

The Israeli military has not yet commented on his arrest.

The municipality condemned Abu Sneineh’s arrest as a “blatant assault on the democratic process” of the Palestinians, calling on the international community to press for his release.
