Egypt, Somalia discuss military ties as Cairo set to deploy troops for AU mission
The Egyptian and Somali defense ministers met in Cairo to discuss strengthening military cooperation, marking the latest sign of deepening military ties between the two African nations amid the volatile situation in the Horn of Africa.
Egyptian Defense Minister Gen. Abdel Mageed Saqr hosted his Somali counterpart, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, in Cairo on Monday for talks on expanding military cooperation, in the latest sign of deepening military ties between the two countries amid ongoing security challenges in the Horn of Africa.
The two officials explored joint initiatives between their armies and ways to support broader security and stability across the African continent, a statement from Egyptian army spokesperson Gharib Abdel Hafez read.
Saqr, who is also commander-in-chief of the Egyptian Armed Forces, praised the close ties between Egypt and Somalia and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to further advance cooperation in multiple military fields.
Similarly, Fiqi commended Egypt’s role in promoting peace and stability in the region, noting that both countries share a common vision on key strategic and mutual interests.
