Syria forms committee to investigate Suwayda violence: What to know
The committee tasked with investigating recent violence in southern Syria's Suwayda is already facing opposition as protesters gathered on Friday demanding an international investigation.
The Syrian Ministry of Justice announced on Thursday that it formed a committee to “investigate the recent events in Suwayda,” citing a decree from President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The seven-member committee is made up of judges Hatem al-Na’san, Hassan Mohammad al-Hamwi, Maysoon Hamoud al-Taweel, and Jamal al-Ashqar; lawyers Tareq al-Kurdi and Ammar Ezzeddine; and Brig. Gen. Mohieddine Harmoush.
Tasked with “revealing the circumstances and conditions” that led to the violence, the committee will investigate the attacks and violations and refer suspected perpetrators to the judiciary. The ministry said the final report must be submitted within three months.
Harmoush previously served as interior minister in the Syrian Interim Government, an opposition administration in exile affiliated with the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces.
