In his first visit abroad as Sudan’s prime minister, Kamil al-Taib Idris met on Thursday with his Egyptian counterpart and with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo, where they focused on Sudan’s civil war and Nile water issues.

Idris' first trip abroad came against the backdrop of claims by the Sudanese army Thursday that it downed an Emirati plane allegedly transporting Colombian mercenaries to support the Rapport Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary on Wednesday.

Idris met with both Sisi and Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, who received him upon his arrival at Cairo International Airport. According to Sudan’s state news agency, SUNA, Idris was accompanied by Sudanese Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism Khaled al-Aiser, as well as Foreign Affairs Minister Omer Siddig.

A statement from Sisi’s office following the meeting said the leaders focused on ways to “further advance” relations between Sudan and Egypt and to “restore stability in Sudan.”
