NATO summit to be held in Turkey next year, alliance says
Brussels' announcement comes as the Trump administration and Erdogan's government have continued to stake out common ground on stabilizing Syria and the southern Caucasus region.
WASHINGTON — The NATO alliance will hold its annual summit in Ankara in July 2026, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte formally announced on Tuesday.
Turkey "has been a strong NATO ally for more than 70 years, making invaluable contributions to our shared security," Rutte said.
“At our next summit, leaders will continue to make NATO a stronger, fairer and more lethal alliance, ready to respond to the critical challenges to our security.”
Why it matters: The selection of Ankara for the venue of next year’s summit signals a continuing thaw between the Turkish government led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and leaders of the Western alliance.
