UAE launches 25-year climate plan for Abu Dhabi: What to know
The Abu Dhabi Climate Change Adaptation Plan sets out a road map to address the growing impacts of climate change through 2050.
The United Arab Emirates on Wednesday unveiled a comprehensive 25-year climate plan to strengthen environmental sustainability across Abu Dhabi.
What happened: The Abu Dhabi Climate Change Adaptation Plan, developed by the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi, sets out a road map to address the growing impacts of climate change in the emirate through 2050. It is the first initiative of its kind for the emirate, the largest in the UAE with a population of nearly 4 million people. The plan is also aligned with the UAE’s nationwide climate policy framework, the National Climate Change Plan 2017–2050.
According to the EAD, the strategy centers on three areas deemed especially vulnerable to climate change: groundwater reserves, soil and biodiversity.
Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, secretary-general of the agency, was quoted in a press release as saying that the plan “will enhance the resilience of natural resources, safeguard biodiversity and strive to ensure water and food security.”
