Taliban slams Iran after 1.8M Afghans deported in past 3 months: What to know
Iran-Afghanistan relations have improved in some respects in recent years, though the increasing deportations of Afghans from the Islamic Republic is creating tensions.
An official from Afghanistan’s Taliban government said on Wednesday that 1.8 million Afghans have been deported from Iran in the past three months, as he criticized host countries for their treatment of the Afghan nationals.
Abdul Rahman Rashid, Afghanistan's deputy minister for refugees and repatriation, told reporters that another 184,000 Afghans were deported from Pakistan and 5,000 were deported from Turkey in the same period in remarks to reporters broadcast by Afghanistan's Amu Television.
“The scale and manner in which Afghan refugees have been forced to return to their homeland is something Afghanistan has never before experienced in its history," the Associated Press quoted him as saying.
Rashid called the expulsions a “serious violation of international norms, humanitarian principles, and Islamic values," per the AP.
