At least two dead, hundreds displaced as wildfires rage across Turkey

Fire crews are battling to contain six fires across several Turkish provinces that have also displaced thousands on the Aegean coast.

ANKARA — At least two people have died and one is in critical condition, Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu said Friday, as a result of wildfires sweeping Turkey’s Aegean coast and beyond.

“So far, 538 people have been affected by the forest fires, ranging from those with minor injuries to emergency personnel,” Memisoglu told journalists. 

“Three patients are currently receiving treatment, one of them in serious condition. Two citizens have lost their lives,” he added.

Fire crews have been battling to contain six wildfires across several provinces, including Izmir, the country’s third-largest province and a major tourism hub, forcing mass evacuations and damaging hundreds of homes.
