Syria courts Gulf investment with high-level Qatar visit amid $7B energy deal
Led by the country’s top diplomat, Syria’s ministers of energy, finance and tourism held a series of meetings in Qatar on Tuesday.
Syria has dispatched a high-level delegation of ministers to Qatar's capital this week, as it continues to court foreign investment and looks to strengthen its ties in the oil-rich Gulf region.
What happened: Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani arrived in Doha on Tuesday, where he met with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Upon returning from his visit to Doha, Shaibani spoke to the press at the Damascus International Airport, where he said that the meeting addressed expanding cooperation in energy, finance, tourism, communications and education, among other sectors.
He said the Syrian delegation and the Qatari Health Ministry agreed to "build a modern hospital in Syria, support the health sector and cooperate in developing the pharmaceutical sector in Syria," according to Syrian state news agency SANA.
