BEIRUT — Lebanon’s military dismantled a large Captagon factory near the border with Syria on Monday as it works to curb illegal smuggling across the border in tandem with the new Syrian authorities’ crackdown against the drug trade.

What happened: In a brief statement released Monday, the Lebanese military said an army unit, backed by a patrol from the Intelligence Directorate, raided a Captagon manufacturing plant in the Harf al-Samaka-Hermel area “as part of the fight against drug manufacturing and trafficking.”

Patrol members dismantled the shop and seized large quantities of the narcotic pills in addition to raw materials used in their manufacture, the statement read, without providing more details.

An investigation is ongoing.
