Idris’ appointment marks the country’s first official prime minister since 2022, as Sudan remains mired in a devastating war between the army and the RSF.

Sudanese Armed Forces chief and the country’s de facto leader Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan appointed on Monday the first official prime minister since 2022, Kamil al-Taib Idris.

What happened: “The chairman of the sovereignty council (Burhan) issued a constitutional decree appointing Kamil al-Taib Idris Abdelhafiz as prime minister,” Sudan’s ruling Transitional Sovereignty Council said in a statement Monday.

Idris will replace diplomat Dafallah Al-Hajj Ali, who was appointed by Burhan in late April as Cabinet Affairs minister — a position that has effectively functioned as acting prime minister since 2022.

Also on Monday, Burhan reappointed Salma Abdul Jabbar al-Mubarak and appointed Nawara Abu Mohammad Mohammad Taher as members of the TSC.
