The visit is the latest sign of an apparent effort to improve ties between Syria and Lebanon after the fall of the Assad regime.

BEIRUT — Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met on Monday with Syria’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Damascus, in his first visit to the neighboring country since taking office earlier this year.

Salam was accompanied by Foreign Minister Joe Rajji, Defense Minister Michel Menassa and Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar.

In a speech Sunday marking the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war, Salam said that he would discuss with Sharaa the fate of hundreds of Lebanese citizens who were forcibly disappeared during the more than 50-year rule of the Assad regime and Syria’s military presence in Lebanon.

“I hope to return with good news about those missing in Syria, and I will update the Lebanese people on this issue tomorrow,” he added.
