WFP chief McCain urges funding to alleviate Syria's hunger crisis
WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain warned of donor fatigue after nearly 14 years of civil war in Syria.
WASHINGTON — As a shattered Syria looks to rebuild, the head of the World Food Program says international aid is desperately needed to address the widespread hunger gripping the country.
In an interview with Al-Monitor following her trip earlier this month to the Syrian capital, Damascus, WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain warned of serious funding fatigue among donors after nearly 14 years of civil war.
“We have certainly felt it at WFP,” McCain said. “People just aren't interested.”
McCain’s first-ever visit to the war-battered country came roughly a month after the lightning-fast insurgency led by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham toppled Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s regime, ending a conflict that killed more than half a million Syrians and spawned the world’s largest refugee crisis.
