Syria FM Shibani touts 'big opportunity for investment' in country at World Economic Forum

Asaad al-Shibani said Syria is not a threat to its neighbors and defended the transitional government’s actions during the first visit by a Syrian foreign minister to the World Economic Forum.

Syrian interim Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani called for international investment in Syria and the lifting of sanctions on the country at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday, while defending the transitional government's actions in the face of insecurity.

Shibani is the first Syrian foreign minister to attend the World Economic Forum, signaling the Damascus' efforts to engage with the outside world after decades of relative isolation under former President Bashar al-Assad.

Shibani described Syria as being safe in an interview with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the forum.
