Who is Maysaa Sabrine, first woman to lead Central Bank of Syria?
Syria’s new leadership has appointed Maysaa Sabrine to head the country’s central bank, the first woman to do so in the institution’s history.
Syria's new interim government has appointed Maysaa Sabrine the governor of the Central Bank of Syria, making her the first female governor in the bank's history.
A senior government official informed Reuters on Monday of her appointment.
Sabrine served as the first deputy governor of the bank from 2018 until her recent appointment. Prior to that, she was the bank's supervising director. Since 2018, Sabrine has served as a representative of the bank on the board of directors of the Damascus Securities Exchange. She also previously served as a member of the Syrian Monetary Council and of Syria's Accounting and Auditing Board.
Sabrine, a certified public accountant with bachelor's and master’s degrees in accounting from Damascus University, has dedicated her over 15-year career to banking oversight. She helped to formulate legislation surrounding banks and supervise financial operations in the country, according to Syrian media.
