UAE, Egypt pursue Iran outreach at first joint BRICS summit in Russia
The summit in the Russian city of Kazan was the first to feature Iran, Egypt and the UAE as full members.
Egyptian and Emirati leaders increased their outreach to Iran at the BRICS summit in Russia this week, as they try to navigate security and strategic interests in conflict-ridden Middle East.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived at the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday and returned home on Thursday after its conclusion. This year's summit marked the first for Iran, the UAE and Egypt as full members, following their official inclusion in January.
Pezeshkian met his Emirati counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Wednesday. The official Islamic Republic News Agency reported that the two discussed a variety of issues, including "the need to halt the attacks by the Zionist regime."
Pezeshkian met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi the same day. The two called on Israel to stop its "aggression" against Gaza and Lebanon, and Pezeshkian vowed to respond to any Israeli attacks on Iran, per the agency.
