Authorities in autonomous northeast Syria made a major Captagon bust on Thursday. The news follows the Syrian government pledging to work with Saudi Arabia on stopping drug trafficking.

Syria’s official news outlet SANA reported that an unnamed security force seized hundreds of kilograms of Captagon pills hidden in a fuel tank outside the city of Qamishli. One suspected drug trafficker was arrested.

The Kurdish-led Asayish, which is responsible for security in much of northeast Syria, has not yet commented on the incident. However, it did announce another seizure of drugs in Al Tabqah in north-central Syria on Sunday. The Asayish did not say what type of drugs were seized, according to the press release.

Background: Captagon is a stimulant that first gained notoriety for its use by Islamic State fighters in battle. It shares properties with other amphetamine drugs.
